WELCOME To Farm Box LA

Picture
Hi, I’m Reisha Fryzer, owner of Farm Box LA.  I created the company to share my love of eating fresh, healthy, seasonal, organic, pesticide-free produce with my fellow Los Angelenos who would love to eat that way too.  And probably would, if they had the time to visit farms and farmers markets often enough to make sure they always have an abundance of the freshest, best produce possible.  Not to worry.  Farm Box LA will bring the farm to you.

Every week, I deliver to your door a Farm Box full of a wonderful variety of freshly picked produce that I personally select from local farms and farmers markets. There’s nothing better than eating food that tastes the way it’s supposed to – as if just harvested from the earth!

I even offer cooking tips and recipes for preparing great tasting dishes with that week’s selections. Then, because I believe in sustainability and our responsibility to the environment, I complete the circle by taking your leftover produce to a food bank, or to farms for composting. I also provide a service where I will transform your leftovers into delicious jams and preserves.

How this all began...

My Portuguese mama always brought a European sensibility to the kitchen and the family dinner table – everything fresh, whether from the backyard garden or from the local market. As the oldest of four girls, I was her designated kitchen helper and learned at an early age that there was a big difference between cooking with fresh produce and cooking with everything else.  To this day, I remember her saying “It doesn’t take a lot of ingredients to make a tasty meal when your produce is fresh!”

This lesson stayed with me as I grew up, and began to prepare myself for a career in the family real estate management business. Then fate stepped in. After I graduated from Boston University’s business school, I took a year off to study French in Paris.  It was there that I experienced what my mama meant by eating fresh.  Parisians shop daily after work for the ingredients they need for that day’s meal  -- from the neighborhood bakery, the butcher shop and a farmer’s market that was open every day. I learned how to shop local and cook fresh, and loved it.

But it wasn’t until I returned to LA that the seeds of the idea for my business were planted. I discovered Vital Zuman Farm and began to work there as a volunteer. I also learned my way around other local farms and farmers markets. A logical next step was to learn how to make the best use all this freshness, so I earned my chef certificate at the Epicurean Culinary School in West Hollywood, and supplemented that with vegan cooking classes.  With all these tools at my fingertips, it made sense for me to turn my love of agriculture and the slow food movement into a business that could bring this healthy way of eating to my neighbors in Los Angeles. That was the start of Farm Box LA.
